The
Adult Program The Adult Program provides a comprehensive
continuing education program for adults of all ages--high
school to senior citizens. Thousands of adults enroll each
semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer). Hundreds of classes are
offered yearly to expand cultural horizons, improve career
skills, develop mind and body, and increase one's
understanding of today's complex world. Faculty members are
carefully selected for their ability to meet the needs of
adults. Programs are offered day and night, Mondays through
Friday, during the day on Saturday and, occasionally on
Sunday, at two adult centers, Cumberland and Clover Drive.
Other Adult Program school sites include South High, South
Middle, and North Middle, as well as the Great Neck Senior
Center. Beyond Great Neck, programs are offered in
the galleries, museums, and theaters of Manhattan.
Educational travel programs include tours of art and
historical centers and visits to major performing arts
festivals. Course fees cover all direct instructional
and material costs, plus some administrative costs. Resident
senior citizens pay a reduced fee for most courses. Resident
high school students may register for most courses without
tuition or with reduced tuition. Scholarships are available
to residents who would otherwise be unable to enroll. Adults
who do not live in the school district may enroll with a
space-available basis and must pay the full fee and, often,
a nonresident surcharge. Most courses at the Clover Drive
Adult Learning Center are funded primarily by federal,
state, and local grants and are offered at no charge. The Adult Program provides a variety of
special programs for older adults. The Academy of Retired
Executives and Professionals (REAP) is one of the Adult
Program's most successful ventures. It is a groundbreaking,
self-directed organization for the mature adult. The Adult
Program, through the generosity of the Great Neck Board of
Education, also provides courses for resident senior
citizens, with a nominal registration fee per course, at the
Great Neck Senior Center. Since 1999, the Adult Program has been
providing Driver Education for resident high school
students. Since 2004, the Adult Program has been providing a
chess program for resident K-12 students. Each year, the Board of Education appoints
residents to the Adult Education Advisory Committee, which
consists of some 25 individuals who make a three-year
commitment to oversee the Adult Program and advise on policy
and curriculum.
