Two New Assistant Superintendents Kelly Newman and Stephen Lando Named Assistant Superintendents for Elementary and Secondary Education Two administrators, who have worked in the Great Neck Public School district since 2007, have advanced to new positions due to the retirement of Terry Horowitz, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, whose position has been eliminated along with the two positions of executive director. Kelly Newman, who was executive director for elementary education, is now the assistant superintendent for elementary education. Stephen Lando, who was executive director for secondary education, is now the assistant superintendent for secondary education.

Reflecting on her new position, Ms. Newman said, "It is an honor and privilege to have been selected to serve the students of the Great Neck Public Schools as the assistant superintendent for elementary education. I am eager to continue to work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, and parents as we collectively foster the academic, social, and emotional growth of each and every child. The year ahead promises to be filled with many exciting endeavors and learning opportunities, and I look forward to working closely with the school community in an effort to enhance our district's already excellent elementary program."

Ms. Newman was the district's executive director for elementary education from 2007-10. She came to Great Neck from the Northport-East Northport school district, where she had been the assistant superintendent for instruction and administration since 2002. From 2000-02, Ms. Newman was principal of the Ocean Avenue Elementary School, Northport-East Northport, and, from 1996-2000, she was principal of the Arrowhead Elementary School, Setauket. Prior to Arrowhead, Ms. Newman was the assistant principal at Nassakeag Elementary School, Setauket, from 1994-96; and interim assistant principal at Marie Curie Middle School, District 26/Bayside, from 1992-93. From 1984-93, she taught grades 3, 5, and 6 at PS 41, Bayside.

Ms. Newman received a Professional Diploma, in education administration and supervision, from the City College of New York, and a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, in elementary education, from Queens College. She also participated in the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University.


Stephen Lando

Stephen Lando was the district's executive director for secondary education from 2007-10. Dr. Lando has had 27 years of experience in public education, 14 of which have been as a secondary school principal and assistant principal.

From 1998-2007, he was principal of the Valley Stream South Junior-Senior High School. While in Valley Stream, Dr. Lando appeared with then New York State Commissioner of Education Richard Mills on New York Talks regarding the Valley Stream Central High School District's effective response to 9/11/01.

From 1997-98, he was the principal of Seaford High School. Prior to that, he was an assistant principal at Eastchester High School, from 1993-97. From 1983-93, Dr. Lando taught social studies and mathematics at Babylon Junior-Senior High School. He is also an adjunct instructor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, teaching graduate-level courses to aspiring school administrators.

Dr. Lando received his Doctor of Education, in educational administration and supervision, from St. John's University. He has a Master of Science, in secondary education, from Long Island University-C.W. Post Campus, and a Bachelor or Arts, in social studies education, from Syracuse University.

Dr. Lando said of his new position, "I look forward to working with the Board of Education, district, building and parental leadership, and teachers as Great Neck's new assistant superintendent for secondary education. I anticipate that our collegial efforts will build upon the many successful programs that are already in place for our students and effectively address new challenges presented by an ever-changing world as we meet the needs of our students and community."
