The Department of
Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) can be reached by phone at
441-4090. FNS operates the National Child Nutrition Program under the
guidelines and regulations of the United States Department of
Agriculture, the New York State Education Department, the NEw York
State Office of General Services, and the Great Neck Board of
Education. FNS is an integral part of the total education program at
no cost to the taxpayer.
During the school year, FNS provides breakfast and lunch programs to
the children in our schools -- to pre-kindergartners and
kindergarteners at the Parkville School and to students in eight
elementary and secondary schools. A variety of nutritious,
well-balanced meals is offered to satisfy the physical needs of each
child attending school. Daily, an average of 760 students purchase
breakfast and/or other food items; an average of 5,400 students
purchase lunch and/or other food items; and an average of 250 staff
members purchase lunch and/or other food items. FNS is financially
self-supporting and is under the direction of the Great Neck Board of
Education.
The FNS Program includes the following components:

1 serving Entree with Grain Product Under
"Other vs. Serve," to be a reimbursable meal, at least two
of the above groups must be selected, one of which must be
an entree. Offer vs. Serve is the Federal regulation that
allows students to choose fewer than all of the food groups
offered. At lunch, Offer vs. Serve is required in the high
schools and is a local Food Service option for the other
grades. |

|
1/2-pint of milk (Fat-free, low-fat, whole, chocolate) Under
"Offer vs. Serve," at least two of the above items must be
selected, one of which must be milk. |
