Cultural Diversity Celebrated

South Middle School celebrated its cultural and ethnic diversity in a big way at its annual Cultural Heritage Celebration, an evening of demonstrations and activities.

Those attending the Celebration were greeted in the main lobby with a host of tables laden with foods and artifacts from many of the countries represented at South Middle. Students, parents, and friends proudly participated in this display of ethnic culture.

Then an hour-long performance of dances and demonstrations by some 75 students delighted the audience. These included: Bollywood dances; Chinese yo-yo demonstrations and Lion Dance; Colombian Cumbia folk dance and music; Greek dances, including Tsamiko, Kalamatiano, and Sirto or "Zorba"; Hispanic Reggaeton; Korean Jang-Goo Chum drum dance and Wae-go Mu dance; and South Asian Fusion dances, featuring Indian, Bengali, and Punjabi music.

The Celebration also included a food drive with donations going to the Interfaith Nutrition Network, a non-profit organization that provides food, clothing, and shelter for needy Long Islanders.

Similar ethnic and cultural events and celebrations are held in schools throughout the district.
