Great Neck has a long-standing philosophy of shared decision-making. For many years, Goal Setting Committees comprised of teachers, administrators and parents worked together to develop and implement goals for each school These committees became Shared Decision Making (SDM) Committees following its implementation in all school districts by the New York State Education Department. SDMs operate under a specific set of rules to discuss a plethora of issues related to the school and its educational program. SDMs are led by a chairperson or chairpersons and meet on a regular basis. Some of the common tasks performed by SDMs include curriculum review, school trips, and the home-school connection. An important task of SDMs is to have teachers, administrators and parents work together to reach consensus on important issues that affect the students and the school.
