Other Schools Outside the District: The State law requires the
district to provide transportation to occupational, private, and
parochial schools up to 15 miles from a student's residence. This
makes many schools located in portions of Nassau County, Queens,
Bronx, and Manhattan accessible to Great Neck residences.
During the 2008-2009 school year, 1,601 students received transportation to 74 technical, private and parochial schools.
Special Service: The placement of students in programs to meet individual needs are in schools located in New York City and throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. This also requires special transportation arrangements, and accounts for higher costs.
Unlike the regulation for non-handicapped students that sets an April 1 deadline to apply for transportation to schools outside the district, handicapped students, by law, must receive transportation throughout the school year. Currently, 42 special education students are being transported to 24 different schools.
