Welcome to the Study Skills Department Website! Our department includes the GNSHS Study Center and the TESL (English Language Learners) program.
Study Center Mission Statement: The Study Center is an integral part of our school designed to support students in all their subject areas. We work cooperatively with subject area teachers and supplement classroom instruction. Our goal is to help all students succeed in their course work and fulfill the new Regents standards. All our students are encouraged to develop their potential to become life-long learners.
Center Profile: The center, located in room 210, is a place where students can study in an informal atmosphere to accomplish serious academic work. It is open Monday through Thursday from 7:40 to 3:30 and Friday from 7:40 to 2:30. We provide computers and technical support for students, in addition to various reference materials, textbooks, review books, practice tests, study guides, and computer software. Our bulletin boards display up-to-date assignments from subject-area teachers.
Student Profile: The Center addresses the needs of the entire student population. Many students work to enrich and enhance their studies as they work toward their Regents diploma. Some are specifically recommended by their subject-area teachers while others choose to attend. If you would like to enroll in our Study Center Learning Strategies program, ask your guidance counselor to make the schedule change.
TESL Mission Statement: Our TESL program is for speakers of other languages who are recent arrivals in this country. The four basic communicaiton skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking - are emphasized through a variety of activities.
