Course Information

Chinese A (Full Year)

A beginner's class in Chinese Mandarin that develops the basic principles behind the characters, hanyu pin-yin and sentence structures. We will lay the foundation for understanding the Chinese culture and continue to discover the wonderful intricacies of the Chinese language.

French A (Full Year)
This is an introduction to the French language and culture. An audio-lingual approach is used to develop the skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Fundamental study and organizational skills are introduced and developed.

Latin A (Full Year)
This is an introductory course in Latin language and Roman civilization and culture. Students are introduced to the basic fundamentals of the language. Emphasis is on grammar and translation. Study and organizational skills are introduced and developed.

Spanish A (Full Year)
This is an introduction to the Spanish language and culture. An audio-lingual approach is used to develop the skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Fundamental study and organizational skills are introduced and developed.

Chinese B (Full Year)

A continuation of our journey into the Chinese culture and the language as we focus on developing and building our knowledge of sentence structure, hanyu pin yin and character writing. We will continue to challenge the students and explore different techniques that will help us understand the Chinese language and the driving forces behind the Chinese culture.

Latin B (Full Year)
This course continues Latin 6. More complex structures are introduced and translation skills are stressed. The investigation of Roman life continues.

French B (Full Year)
Utilizing the fundamental skills developed in the French 6th grade program, this course is designed to strengthen the four (4) required language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The student will have the opportunity to focus on the "communicative" skills of listening, speaking, and writing. Daily homework and selected projects reinforce classwork in particular reading and writing skills.  In addition, the cultures of those peoples and countries whose language we study are explored.

Spanish B (Full Year)
Utilizing the fundamental skills developed in the Spanish 6th grade program, this course is designed to strengthen the four (4) required language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Students will have the opportunity to focus on the "communicative" skills of speaking and listening. Daily homework and selected projects reinforce classwork in particular reading and writing skills. In addition, the cultures of those peoples and countries whose language we study are explored.

French 8

The successful completion of French B is a prerequisite for this course.  By the end of this course, students are expected to demonstrate a measurable degree of communicative competency both in speaking and writing in French, as mandated by Checkpoint A, the curriculum guide designed by New York State.  The course concludes with the students taking a final exam.  The final average from this course will be included on the high school transcript and is included in the total cumulative high school average1 Unit of High School Credit

Latin 8 (Full Year)
This course continues Latin 7. More complex sentence structures are introduced and translation skills are emphasized. The investigation of Roman life continues. Roman history is introduced. Students who successfully complete this course and pass the New York State Proficiency Exam, will receive one unit of high school credit.

Spanish 8 (Full Year)
As a sequential course of Spanish 7, basic language skills continue to be emphasized as more complex grammatical structures are studied. By the end of this year, students are expected to have a good knowledge of both the present and preterite tenses. Students are encouraged to apply their previously and newly-learned foreign language skills, especially in the areas of speaking and listening. Students who successfully complete this course and pass the New York State Proficiency Exam, will receive one unit of high school credit.

Spanish I
This is a beginning course in the study of Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Fundamental foreign language skills are introduced and developed.
