Course Information

Performing  Band 6
The Performing Band 6 consists of students that play at least New York State Level 1 music. This performing group puts on at least one assembly and two evening concerts each year. Varied styles of  music are selected to offer a challenge to students but not to  overwhelm them with difficulty. Sight-reading of different  literature will take place throughout the school  year.

Performing  Band 7
The Performing Band 7 consists of students that play at least New York State Level 2 music. This performing group puts on at least one assembly and two evening concerts each year. Varied styles of  music are selected so students may learn to deal with many  different musical situations. Music is selected to offer a  challenge to students but not to overwhelm them with difficulty.  Sight-reading of different literature will take place throughout  the school year.

Performing Band 8
The Performing Band 8 consists of students that play at least New York State Level 3 music. This performing group puts on at least one assembly and two evening concerts each year. Varied styles of  music are selected so students may learn to deal with many  different musical situations. Music is selected to offer a  challenge to students but not to overwhelm them with difficulty.  Sight-reading of different literature will take place throughout  the school year.

Chorus 7/8
The Senior  Chorus consists of students in grades 7 and 8. Class participation  culminates in at least three assemblies and two evening concerts  each year. Proper singing technique, principals of three-part harmony, and various styles of music are covered in the  curriculum. The students have varied opportunities to sing alone as well as in small ensembles.

Treble Chorus
The Treble Chorus consists of students in grade 6. Class participation culminates in at least two assemblies and two evening concerts  each school year. Proper singing technique, principals of two-part  harmony, and various styles of music are covered in the  curriculum. The students have varied opportunities to sing alone  as well as in small ensembles.

General  Music  Six
The Music 6  class, is a general music course whose aim is to increase the students knowledge and understanding of music. Basic musical  concepts are taught through "hands on" activities and listening  experiences. Students will create their own compositions on a  synthesizer linked to a computer. They will learn about timbre,  pitch, melody, harmony, rhythm, form, dynamics, duration, and  music notation.

Performing  Orchestra
The  Performing Orchestra consists of students that play at least at  the New York State Level 2 music. This performing group puts on at  least one assembly and two evening concerts each school year.  Varied styles of music are selected so students may learn to deal  with many different musical situations. Music is selected to offer  a challenge to students but not to overwhelm them with difficulty.  Sight-reading of different literature will take place throughout  the school year.

Strings 6
The aim of  the Strings 6 program, is to improve the students skills  so they may be able to perform Level 2 music. The class entails  working with a standard orchestra method book, that presents the  necessary skills in a structured and logical fashion. Students  play both individually and in groups. Weekly assignments are  given.

General Music Seven
The General  Music 7 class, is a course aimed at increasing the students knowledge and understanding of music. Each quarter a different  area of musical study is highlighted. The first quarter is devoted to Instruments of the Orchestra and American Composers; the second quarter, Classical Music from the 1600's to the present; the third quarter, History of Jazz; and the fourth quarter the History of Rock. Each class will have an opportunity to use the  music computer lab for various projects.

Music 6 Instrumental Class
The Music 6  instrument class is an instructional course for Performing Band 6  students. Students work on perfecting the skills that are presented in an intermediate band method. This includes studies in  cut time, 6/8 time, concert major scales -C,F,Bb,Eb,Ab, a concert  Bb chromatic scale, all forms of 16th note  rhythms.
