WELCOME TO THE SOUTH MIDDLE SCHOOL ART DEPARTMENT
The role of the art program at the middle school level is important in relation to the needs of the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students that the middle school encompasses. The social, psychological and emotional needs are of particular concern to the structure and educational position of the art curriculum. The art program aims to engage students in hands-on art activities that foster a positive feeling of self worth in the students.
The Art Curriculum is both sequential and spiraling. Each grade level has a specific focus addressing skills, creative expression and aesthetic appreciation. The overlap of concepts varies in depth.
At its most basic level the program exposes students to a variety of art forms, media, material and concepts. It provides students the opportunity for “hands-on” experimentation and application in a variety of content areas. Many different art materials are studied and used. The art program aims to foster creativity and promote self-evaluation. The program also encourages problem-solving techniques and critical thinking on the part of the student(s).
The art program at South Middle School is aligned with the New York State Visual Art Standards at the intermediate level outlined below:
Standard 1: Creating, Performing & Participating in the Arts
Standard 2: Knowing and Using Art Materials and Resources
Standard 3: Responding to and Analyzing Works of Art
Standard 4: Understanding theCultural Dimensions of Art
