ART & MURAL CLUB
The Art Club is for all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who have a special interest in the visual arts. Regular attendance is recommended in order to complete all art work. Planned activities, including paper mache, painting, and crafts will be offered to Art Club members with direction from the club sponsor.
CHAMBER ORCHESTRA ENSEMBLE
For students interested in playing in a small orchestra. Open to grade 6-8 students. Enrollment by audition with Mr. Schwartz.
CHINESE YO-YO CLUB
For students who want to learn how to use the Chinese Yo-Yo, which is also know as Chinese Diabolo. It is a game of balance, timing and creativity.
For students interested in use of computers after school for assignments and other activities. The Center is open from 3-4 pm several days during the week.
EARTH KEEPERS CLUB
A group of committed students who meet to dedicate time and efforts to various activities aimed at conserving our natural resources. This year's efforts focused on implementing a school-wide recycling program, a "Pennies for the Planet" fundraiser to support preservation of critically endangered habitats worldwide, sponsorship of several Earth Day/Arbor Day festivities and participation in an Earth Day clean-up of a nearby protected habitat.
GAY STRAIGHT ALLIANCE - GSA
If you envision a world free of bias, hate and homophobia, you need to join the GSA. All students, regardless of their sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and accepting school. We will spread this message while engaging in
fun activities, holding fund raisers and eating rainbow snacks. All students are welcome.
GRADE 6 AFTER SCHOOL STUDY AND LOUNGE CLUB
An after school study “place” for grade 6 students to meet under the direction of a teacher in a relaxed “lounge” type atmosphere and setting. Sixth graders can work on their homework and studies together, as well as engage in some board games that are age-appropriate, fun and have an educational related base.
GTV is a club designed to focus on teen issues, concerns and needs. Videos, movies, music videos, film clips and tv shows will be presented and discussions will follow each program. The members of this club will see first hand, contemporary scenarios dealing with drugs, peer pressure, bullying, self-esteem, harassment and much more. Members will increase their awareness of these important issues and the discussions will help them deal with their concerns.
For students interested in a place to work on their homework assignments after school under supervision and assistance by staff.
LITERARY MAGAZINE - "REBEL PEN"
For students interested in contribution to the school literary magazine. In addition to their own creative writing or art work, students will get involved in editing, production, and distribution of the magazine.
This Club is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students interested in taking part in the Brookhaven National Laboratory Magnetic Levitation contest. The contest will take place sometime in April at the laboratory site. A group of no more than 15 will be taken out to the site on that day to compete in any of the four (4) contest categories. This group of contest participants will be chosen from the club membership according to specific eligibility requirements. We will meet once a week, on Wednesdays, from 3 till 4 in room 211.
To be held on specific dates in grade 6 math classrooms.
For students to compete in math contests with students in other schools.
S.A.D.D. - STUDENTS AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE DECISIONS
For students interested in increasing their involvement in activities and in broadening their understanding of the harmful effects of poor decision making and substance abuse.
SCHOOL MUSICAL - SOUTH THEATRE CO.
This year's dates for the school play at South Middle School is March 23, 24, and 25th. All students are invited to participate in the school play.
SCHOOL NEWSPAPER, "MIDDLEVIEW"
For students interested in working for the school newspaper. Students learn to edit, produce, research and write articles. They also distribute the school newspaper.
For students interested in developing science projects and in participating in the Nassau County Science Congress.
For students especially interested in science exercises and problems. Students will be involved in science competitions.
SIGHT SINGING CLUB
Learn to read music and use your voice correctly. This Club will help you prepare for the annual NYSSMA music festival.
S.O. (COMMUNITY ACTION)
For students interested in participation in community improvements, projects,
including fund raising for established charitable causes and organizations and visits to orphanages, hospitals, and senior citizen centers.
For students who wish to be aides in the classroom or in other parts of the building. Students can volunteer to be guides during Open House.
S.O. (STUDENT GOVERNMENT)
For students interested in school service, school government activities, and fund raising. Some of the activities will take place during the school day and others after school. Information concerning meetings and activities are announced through the daily bulletins and the PA system.
A forum for students who are interested in acting (but not necessarily dancing or singing.) Theater Workshop meets in the Fall and Spring. Student actors have a chance to develop their techniques through improvisation in the Fall and through improvisation and scene work in the Spring. Theater Workshop presents a short play festival in June.
TV NEWS (TV STUDIO: AM NEWS PROGRAM)
For students interested in participating in the production of the closed-circuit morning news program shown in the homeroom classrooms, and in the annual production of the Video Yearbook.
YEARBOOK - "GENESIS"
For students interested in developing the annual South Middle School yearbook, including staff work and photography.
