First Grade Curriculum Highlights
The following is a list of some of the scientific concepts that will be covered during first grade.
1. Waves: Light and SoundFirst grade scientists will develop an understanding of waves and how they interact with matter. Students will learn how sound is created using vibration, pitch and volume of sound, and create an instrument to experiment with sound. Scientists will learn why light reflects, sources of natural and artificial light, and why objects are transparent, translucent, and opaque.
2.Structure, Function, and Information Processing:Our scientists will explore how animals and plants have structures that help them to survive in their environment. Topics that will be covered are: Adaptations of animals and plants for survivial, the growth and development of animals, and inheritance or how plants and animals look like their parents.
3. Space Systems: Patterns and Cycles-:First grade students will learn and observe that the patterns of the sun, moon, and Earth are predictable. Our young astronomers will observe the time of the year and relate the amount of sunlight to the seasons. Students will also venture into the solar system during their first trip into Starlab(mobile planetarium).
