    Fifth Grade Curriculum Highlights

    microscope

The following is a list of some of the scientific concepts that will be covered during fifth grade:

    1. Matter and Its Interactions:

Fifth grade chemists will make observations and measurements to identify the properties of different examples of matter. Our scientists will also engage in the study of molecules, atoms, and subatomic structures to small for the eye to see. Students will engage in the study of mixtures and solutions. Students will identify the characteristics of a chemical reaction and how a new substance is formed with different properties.

    2. Earth's Systems:

Fifth grade scientists will explore the four main systems of Earth. These systems include the Geosphere(Earth's crust, core, rock, and soil), Hydrosphere(all water on Earth), Atmosphere(all the gases that surround Earth) and the Biosphere(all organisms on Earth).

    3. Matter & Energy in Organisms & Ecosystems:

Fifth grade biologists will learn that all organisms are connected to food chains and food webs. Students will explore the interdependent relationship of plants, animals, and decomposers in various ecosystems. Students will identify that organisms(any living thing) can only survive in their environments if their needs are met.

    4. Earth's Place in the Universe:

Students will investigate why stars vary in size and color based on their proximity to the planet Earth. Our astronomers will observe patterns of Earth's rotation and revolution and their impact on day and night, shadows, and position of the Sun during the day and the four seasons. Students will track the movement of the moon around Earth and identify the different phases of the moon.
