Mr. Joseph Rutkowski

Director of Instrumental Music at Great Neck North High since 1991, Joseph Rutkowski is also a practicing musician. As a concert clarinetist, he has performed two solo recitals at Carnegie (Weill) Recital Hall and has appeared as a concerto soloist and chamber music artist at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York City. Mr. Rutkowski has been hailed by The New York Times as “…an agile and powerful player” and by the International Clarinet Magazine as a clarinetist with “awesome technical prowess.” He has performed chamber music and orchestral concerts with James Galway, Mstislav Rostropovich, Eleanor Steber, William Warfield and Maurice Andre and under the batons of Alan Hovhaness, Karel Husa, Laszlo Halasz and JoAnn Falletta. His recording of Schubert’s “Shepherd on the Rock” for Ali Mar Records received critical acclaim in Richard Gilbert’s The Clarinetist’s Discography. 

Mr. Rutkowski has worked with composers Leo Kraft, Alan Hovhaness, David Loeb, Jack Gottlieb, Ursula Mamlock, Robert Miller, Michael Flamhaft, Michael Czajkowski, Elliot Finkel, Nelson Kole, Roger Ames, Alan Schwartz and Dr. Karel Husa. He has served as concertmaster and assistant conductor with the Rotary Club of Great Neck Community Band. Joseph Rutkowski currently performs as clarinetist of the Cross Island Chamber Ensemble, L'Arema Ensemble and has served as principal clarinetist of the Park Avenue Chamber Orchestra. He is the resident clarinetist at the East End Temple in Manhattan.

Mr. Rutkowski has authored articles and research papers, and lectured at many conferences including the NYSSMA All State Conference, the Music Educators National Conference in Washington, D.C. and the Contemporary Music Festival at Cornell University. He studied clarinet with Lawrence Sobol, John Marco, Eric Simon, Heinrich Geuser, Pamela Weston, Alfred Longo, Joseph Rich and chamber music with David Weber, David Glazer, Max Watras, William Kroll, Claus Adam, Carol Glenn, Morey Ritt and Samuel Baron and has performed in the master classes of Karl Leister and Marcel Moyse. He studied music theory and Schenkerian analysis with Carl Schachter, David Loeb, David Tcimpidis, Edward Aldwell, Charles Cuckson and Frederick Werle. He studied woodwind techniques with Anthony Maiello and string techniques with Harry Kobialka.

Joseph Rutkowski studied in New York and Germany, receiving degrees in performance from Mannes College and Queens College and in Educational Administration from Hunter College. He is a two-time Presidential Scholars Teacher Recognition Award recipient. Mr. Rutkowski has served on the faculties of Queens College, Mannes College, Westchester Conservatory, Turtle Bay Music School and was the Symphony Orchestra conductor and teacher at Stuyvesant High School for the eight years preceding his appointment in Great Neck.

Joseph Rutkowski lives with his wife, Lisa (a psychotherapist and social worker specializing in adoption with Family Focus (http://familyfocusadoption.org/) .  Joseph Rutkowski often performs jazz concerts with his sons Benjamin and Daniel.  Benjamin plays the trombone and is a filmmaker and graduate of NYU, Vassar College and the Bronx High School of Science.  Daniel is a working musician, playing the trumpet and piano and is a graduate of Bard College and the LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts.

Dr. Pamela Levy

2017 - Present Choir

Dr. Pamela Levy, enjoys a rich and varied career as a musician. A graduate of The Juilliard School, she received a B.M.  and M.M., and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Manhattan School of Music. She is currently the Department Head of Fine and Performing Arts at Great Neck North High School and the director of the of the Manhattan Chorale at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege. Dr. Levy has been the music director of several operas and musicals including Le Nozze di FigaroDie Zauberflöte, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Die Fledermaus, Gianni Schicchi, Suor Angelica, Carmen, Sweeney Todd, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, and others. In addition she has prepared children’s choruses for Manhattan School of Music productions including The Araboolies of Liberty Street, Der Wildschutz, and Carmen, and was the music director for “Sleepy Hollow,” an opera which was performed by the Dicapo Opera Company at the Sands Point Preserve.
