    Q: What is the musical this year?

    Q: When is the musical this year?

    A: March 20 & 21, 2024

    Q: Who performs in the musical?  Do you perform both nights?

    A: Anyone who wants to!  Any interested 6th, 7th, or 8th grader can perform—no one gets cut! Every student performs both nights.

    Q: Can I join even if I didn’t participate in the musical last year?

    A: Of course!  We are always excited to see and work with new students no matter how much experience they have.

    Q: Can I be in the musical and play sports?

    A: Yes!  If you are involved in sports and the musical, you will split your time between the two.  However, the two weeks before the show can’t be missed.  Keep in mind, though, that some students find it difficult to manage both sports and the musical, so it might be a good idea to pick the one that is more important to you. And don’t worry, spring sports start after the musical is over.

    Q: How much time will I spend on the musical each week?

    A: It depends on your role.  If you have a lead role, you can expect to be needed about 5-6 days a week.  If you don’t have a lead role, you will probably only be needed about 2-3 days a week. Rehearsals run from 3-5 or 3-6 during the week and from 11-5 on certain Sundays.  The amount of time you need really depends on what we are working on and how close to the show we are.  As we get closer to the show, you’ll be needed more often and for longer periods of time.  Don’t worry, we will always post the rehearsal schedule ahead of time so you know when you are needed.

    Q: When are auditions?

    A: Auditions will take place just after Thanksgiving.  You must sign up for a spot at the informational meeting which will take place mid November. *This meeting will be announced in the Google Classroom and on the bulletin board outside of room 118.)

    Q: How do I sign up for auditions?

    A: We will have a short informational meeting mid November.  At this meeting, we will answer your questions and give out an audition packet.  This packet will have information about the audition process, dialogue and vocal audition pieces, and a résumé for you to fill out.  *This meeting will be announced in the Google Classroom and on the bulletin board outside of room 118.)

    Q: How are parts assigned?

    A: Students who are interested in performing can audition for any part they’d like.  Afterward, the musical team meets to discuss auditions and fit each student in the best role for him/her.  Sometimes, callbacks are needed  to assign lead roles.  Keep in mind that lead roles are usually double-casted.  This means that two students usually get the lead and each performs that role on one show night.

    Q: Do lead roles go to older students first?

    A: Absolutely NOT!  The assignment of roles is based on auditions, not age or experience with the NMS musical.  Even if you are a 6th grader, you can have a lead role.

    Q: So then why have there always been mostly 7th and 8th graders cast in lead roles?

    A: It’s natural that the more time you spend working hard at something, the better you’ll be at it.  7th and 8th graders are usually more experienced, which is why their auditions are more likely to get them lead roles.

    Q: What if I don’t get the part I want?

    A: You’re not alone.  Even the most successful Hollywood actors have stories about not getting the parts they wanted.  The role you have is not as important as what you do with it — meaning, if you are a true actor, you will take whichever part you are given and OWN IT! Make it the best it can be, and even the smallest roles can result in unforgettable performances.  And remember the answer to the previous question — if you stick with it and work hard, you’ll gain great experience that will help you in the future.

    Q: Do I have to audition in front of others?

    A: Yes.  To make the process smooth and purposeful, auditions are held in the auditorium in front of the musical team and other students who are auditioning.

    Q: Can I be in the show but not have a big part?

    A: Of course!  There are many opportunities for the ensemble to be on stage.  When you are a part of the ensemble, you usually come on stage in big groups, so it’s a lot easier to be on stage if you’re nervous.

    Q: How can I prepare for auditions?

    A: Read the audition packet that you receive at our first meeting in November. Go through it very carefully, and use it to prepare for your audition.  It is also extremely helpful to watch the movie or clips of it on YouTube. *This meeting will be announced in the Google Classroom and on the bulletin board outside of room 118.)

    Q: How can we find out more about the musical and receive important updates?

    A: We always update students in several ways: postings outside room 118, announcements in the morning over the loudspeaker or Vbrick, and updates on our official musical website, which you can visit at https://www.greatneck.k12.ny.us/Page/12450

    A: The Musical Team is more than happy to answer any other questions you have. Please bring your questions to the meeting in November, or ask the Musical Team members when you see them.
