    Cycle 6 Assignment: Tuesday 5/5

Good Morning and welcome to Cycle 6! Let’s fill up those musical GAS tanks again! Watch the attached video recording for our weekly greeting message! :)

May 5 Greeting Text: Good Morning Second Graders! I hope you had a wonderful week! I’m coming to you today with three new ways to add music into your day! However, something NEW is that your weekly Activity from now on will always be found in your classroom Seesaw. If you’d like, the Game and Song, which have always been optional, will still be found here every week. The Activity you’ll find in your Seesaw is about correctly identifying so-mi patterns, and then, seeing if you can sing those patterns back to me. The Game is actually a silly dance to Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” and the Song is one of my new favorites that connects to a book that I’ve always loved with a wonderful message. I hope you have another wonderful Tuesday! I miss you very much!

Cycle 6 GAME: Go Noodle Dance to “Ode to Joy”

Cycle 6 ACTIVITY: So-Mi Pattern Match on Seesaw

NOTE: From now on, all assignments will be posted on Seesaw.

Cycle 6 SONG: “The Dot Song” by Emily Arrow

Have you ever read the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds? It tells the story of a girl, Vashti, who believes she cannot draw. With some encouragement from her teacher, she gives it a try by jabbing a dot onto her paper. Wait until you see what comes from that first step in trying something Vashti thought she couldn’t do!

What could you try to do that you thought you couldn’t do? I’m not really a great baker, so I tried baking some cookies with my children. They actually turned out great! Listen to this song by Emily Arrow for some inspiration. Here is a live performance. For some extra movement, learn the motions to the song! “Just make a mark and see where it takes you.” :)

    Cycle 5 Assignment: Tuesday 4/28

Good Morning and welcome to Cycle 5! Let’s fill up those musical GAS tanks again! Listen to the attached audio recording for our weekly greeting message! :)

    April 28 Greeting Message Audio

April 28 Greeting Message Text: Good Morning Second Graders! I hope you all had a wonderful week! I called my best friend from high school and we sang “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” with our kids. It was SO fun! I hope you found a friend to sing it with too! Today, I’m bringing you three new ways to add music into your day! The Game will help you practice singing our solfege notes “mi,” “so,” and “la.” The Activity will be about matching music notation to some of our songs from class. The Song is one of my favorites that I wanted to share with you! Have a wonderful Tuesday!

    Cycle 5 GAME: Disappearing Solfege

Use the attached Google Slides to follow along the Disappearing Solfege game. Remember, SOLFEGE means the notes “mi,” “so,” and “la.” On the first slide, you will see four rows of rhythms with the solfege letters written underneath. I will sing all four rows. On the next slide, the solfege letters will disappear from the last row. You need to try to remember that row and sing it by yourself! On the third slide, the solfege letters will also disappear from the second to last row! The game continues until the last slide where all of the letters have disappeared. Try to sing the whole song from memory by yourself! :)

Cycle 5 ACTIVITY: Music Notation Song Match

Print out the worksheet. Draw a line to connect each song to the music staff that correctly shows the beginning of that song. I have completed the first one for you. For fun, draw a picture under each song name that represents the words or how we play the game. Take a picture of your finished worksheet and email it to me.

If you are unable to print out the worksheet, you can simply send me an email listing each song and the staff number it should be connected to. For example, “Icha Backa, staff 3.”

Cycle 5 SONG: “With My Own Two Hands” by Jack Johnson

Listen to the song. The words describe how changes in the world can come about when a single person decides to take action. This makes me think about our Baker Habits for Life! I’m hoping that by sending you music activities and checking in with you each week, I’m bringing some joy to your life! That’s what I’m doing with MY own two hands! What are YOU doing to take care of yourself? Others? Your environment? :)

    Cycle 4 Assignment: Tuesday 4/21

Good Morning and welcome to Cycle 4! Get ready to fill up your musical GAS tank! Listen to the attached audio recording for our weekly greeting message! :)

    April 21 Greeting Message Audio

April 21 Greeting Message Text: Good Morning Second Graders! With each week that passes, I find myself missing your smiles, your singing voices, your kindness and your joy more and more! Life is just not the same without you in it! Today, I’m bringing you three new ways to add music into your day! Have a wonderful Tuesday!

    Cycle 4 GAME: Musical Clothes

We all know the game Musical Chairs. In this version, you need to gather lots of silly clothing and accessories from around your house. Think oversized shirts, hats, scarves, glasses, costume accessories, shoes, crazy socks, etc. Put all of the clothing and accessories into a bag. With your family, choose an appropriate, fun and upbeat song. Select one person to be in charge of pausing the music. Stand in a circle and pass the bag around. Dance if you want! When the music is paused, whoever is holding the bag has to put on one piece of clothing. Keep playing until the bag is empty. Whoever has the silliest outfit is the winner! :)

Cycle 4 ACTIVITY: Rainbow Rhythms Form

By now, you should all have your Rainbow Rhythms completed and should have spent some time practicing how to perform the rhythms you wrote. Today, we are going to use the patterns you created to compose a longer rhythm.

Form is the structure of a musical composition. When labeling the form of a song, each unique part or section is assigned a capital letter. You are going to create THREE parts (A, B and C). Watch the video below to learn about your Cycle 4 Assignment! Email me your completed Form Worksheet and include a recording of you performing your song if you can! :)

    Cycle 3 Assignment: Tuesday 4/7

Good Morning and welcome to Cycle 3! Get ready to fill up your musical GAS tank! Listen to the attached audio recording for our weekly greeting message and I’ll explain more! :) If you need help or have any questions, please have a parent email me!.

    April 7 Greeting Message Audio

April 7 Greeting Message Text: Good Morning Second Graders! I can’t express how much I miss you! I wish I was greeting you at the music room door this morning with a big smile and we were getting ready to spend 40 marvelous minutes together! Since we can’t do that right now, I am trying to bring a little bit of the music room to YOU! Each Tuesday, I will post a weekly greeting message. I thought it would be nice for you to get to hear my voice and see my face sometimes! In each message, I’ll explain what we’ll be working on. Some of you may be practicing instruments and making music at home already, but some of you may need help filling up your music GAS tank! Let me explain what I mean! GAS is an acronym for a GAME, an ACTIVITY and a SONG! Each week, I’ll give you three ways to bring more music into your day! Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Cycle 3 GAME: The Cup Game

Try it alone or with your family! Here is a link to the game.

Cycle 3 ACTIVITY: Rainbow Rhythms Performing and Practice

Look at your Rainbow Rhythms. Practice performing each of the color rhythms you created. You could clap them, play them on an instrument, or find creative ways to play them around the house. Maybe you can use some pencils and a notebook to play them on a homemade drum pad! Maybe you can stretch some rubber bands around an empty tissue box and play them on a homemade string instrument. Be creative! Just make sure you can play all of your patterns. You’ll need to be comfortable doing that for next week! :)

Cycle 3 SONG: “We Are Enough” by Emily Arrow

Listen to the song and read the words with a parent. What else could you add to the lyrics? Mrs. Gorney thinks there are not enough brownies or beach days! But, WE are enough. All we really need is each other! :)
