Homework Guidelines

Why Homework is Assigned:

Reinforces and/or extends skills and material that have been taught in class

Helps students develop independence, responsibility, and effective study habits

Stimulates and fosters critical and creative thinking
-
Serves as a communication link between school and home
When Homework Will Be Assigned:
-
Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday.

Long term assignments or projects may span through the week and may be worked on over weekends and vacations.

Assignments include math and language arts.
-
Fifteen minutes of reading each evening is required.

Homework is not assigned over weekends or during school vacations.
Student’s Homework Responsibilities:

Students are expected to understand that homework is an important part of their routine at home.

Students should set aside a time and place to complete homework.

Students are expected to complete homework each evening and develop a system to make sure the assigned work is returned the following day.

Students are expected to complete assignments and fifteen minutes of reading each evening.

Work should be completed neatly and carefully.

If a student encounters difficulty with an assignment, he/she is expected to seek help from an adult.
Parent’s Homework Responsibilities:

Parents are expected to provide a time, place and materials for their child to complete the homework.

Parents are expected to monitor their child’s progress on assignments and review the assignments to be sure they are completed neatly and carefully.

Parents are expected to offer assistance when their child is experiencing difficulty with homework assignments.

Parents are encouraged to send a note if an assignment is especially difficult.
Teacher’s Homework Responsibilities:

Your child’s teacher will assign homework in addition to fifteen minutes of reading.

Long-term assignments such as projects will be assigned periodically.

The teacher will check all homework in a timely fashion and provide feedback.

The teacher will review/reteach any areas of noted difficulty.
If Students Do Not Hand in Properly Completed Homework:

The teacher will speak with the child and handle each case on an individual basis.

The teacher may do one or more of the following:
-
A note may be sent home.
-
The teacher may call the parents.
-
Children may be expected to complete the assignment in school, on their own time.
-
The assignment may be sent home again to be completed, the following evening.

Assignments may be modified at the teacher’s discretion.
