Grade 7 Course Information

  • Band 7: All students who play brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments who have successfully completed Band 6 are invited to continue in Band 7. Concepts of breathing, posture, hand position, tone quality, articulation, rhythm, intonation, dynamics, phrasing, ensemble, and note reading are the focus of every lesson. Membership entails mandatory attendance at all concerts. Students are encouraged to participate in the NYSSMA Solo Ensemble Evaluation Festival held each spring, which can lead to being selected for the All-County Band or New York State Band Directors Association Honor Band.

    Orchestra 7: All students who play string instruments who have successfully completed Orchestra 6 are invited to continue in Orchestra 7. Concepts of bowing, posture, hand position, tone quality, articulation, rhythm, intonation, dynamics, phrasing, ensemble, and note reading are the focus of every lesson. Students are encouraged to participate in the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Evaluation Festival held each spring, which can lead to being selected for the All-County Orchestra or Long Island String Festival Orchestra. Membership entails mandatory attendance at all concerts.

    Chorus 7: The Senior Chorus consists of students in grades 7 and 8. Class participation culminates in a few assemblies and two evening concerts each year. Proper singing technique, principals of three-part harmony, and various styles of music are covered in the curriculum. The students have varied opportunities to sing alone as well as in small ensembles. Membership entails mandatory attendance at all concerts. Students are encouraged to participate in the NYSSMA Solo Ensemble Evaluation Festival held each spring, which can lead to being selected for the All-County Chorus.

     General Music 7: The General Music 7 class is a course aimed at increasing the students' knowledge and understanding of music. Each quarter a different area of musical study is highlighted. The first quarter is devoted to Instruments of the Orchestra and American Composers; the second quarter, Classical Music from the 1600's to the present; the third quarter, History of Jazz; and the fourth quarter the History of Rock. Each class will have an opportunity to use iPads and other technology for various projects.
