Mrs. Jessica York

Jessica York has been teaching science at North High for 22 years and has been the chairperson of the department for the last eight.  During her time at North, she has taught a robust number of classes including: Regents and Inclusion Biology, Advanced Placement Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Science in Society (now Science in Our World), Regents and Inclusion Chemistry, Advanced Placement Environmental Science, and all levels of Science Research.  She is also currently serving as the Science Research Director.  She has served as the faculty advisor for the environmental club (SAVE) as well as the pre-med club. Early in her career at North, Mrs. York coached girls gymnastics. Mrs. York is dual certified in Biology and Chemistry and also holds a certification in School Building Leadership. She graduated from Adelphi University with a BS in biology with a minor in education and with an MA in education.  In addition, she took a 30 credit certification series through Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts to acquire her SBL certification.

 

Outside of school, Mrs. York is the secretary, community relations manager, and founding Board member for Educate America Right Now Inc., a 501.c3 nonprofit that helps support adults returning to college for their first degree; Mrs. York co-founded this charity in 2014.

 

On a personal note, Mrs. York enjoys running and has participated in many races throughout her running career, including a number of half marathons; her best time is 1:49:54.  She also enjoys yoga and meditation and is investigating routes to becoming a certified yoga instructor. She has been meditating regularly since 2013.  Mrs. York​ is also a prolific crochet artist and has been running her own small business in yarn crafts, The Conscious Crafter, since November of 2015.  She is happily married to her husband, Alexander and living in Connecticut.
