2026-27 Optional Attendance Zone Letter for Incoming 6th Grade and Newly Enrolled Secondary Entrants
December 2025
Dear Great Neck Families,
The Great Neck Public Schools Board of Education is pleased to offer an “Optional Attendance Zone” opportunity for current fifth-grade students as identified by the school boundaries approved by the Board. Parents/guardians may choose between attending North Middle School or South Middle School for their child as the student begins their secondary school journey. You are receiving this letter because you currently reside within the optional zone.
We want to share two modifications the district has made to our existing practice. First, families with secondary-aged children that are new entrants to the District will have this same opportunity to choose between attending the appropriate secondary school in either the north or the south setting best aligned to your child’s needs.
Secondly, secondary-aged resident students returning to public school from a private or parochial placement will be offered this opportunity as well.
Once your child is registered for their respective secondary school setting, the placement will continue through high school commencement. Please note this only applies to families identified within the optional zone.
For registration details, please refer here for guidance.
Transportation will be provided to all students who are deemed eligible in accordance with Board Policy 8400.
Families with younger siblings will be offered the same “Optional Attendance Zone” choice when they reach sixth grade or upon registration into a GNPS secondary program.
Please complete the ParentSquare Form using the “form” link above by January 30, 2026. You must submit a request even if your child’s older sibling(s) already is attending school.
If we do not receive a response indicating your choice of school, they will be placed in the current school of their older sibling. If this is your first or only child in GNPS, they will be placed in their respective school at the district’s discretion.
We recognize that choosing a secondary school is an important decision for families, and we hope that this opportunity provides greater flexibility to select the setting best suited for your child.
The Optional Zone FAQ can provide you with more information about each of our secondary schools prior to making your Optional Attendance Zone decision. In addition, you are welcome to attend public events as shown on the Interactive Calendar.
Confirmation approving your request will be sent on or about February 14, 2026. Please contact Dr. Holtzman (516-441-4009) if you have any questions.
Very truly yours,
Kenneth R. Bossert, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
