The Board of Education of Great Neck Public Schools affirms its goal of providing a safe
and economical transportation system for District students. Transportation will be
provided at District expense to those students who are deemed eligible. The program
shall comply with all applicable laws, regulations and policies established by federal,
state and local authorities.
Our Transportation Department is a vital component of this school district’s operation
and requires careful management to ensure the greatest value from the budget
authorized by the taxpayers. Our transportation program serves approximately 9,000
students, including those attending schools within the district, as well as more than 80
out-of-district private, parochial, and schools for children with special needs.
The following guide the management of pupil transportation:
- Provide transportation services for resident students of the District within the statutory 15-mile limit, as well as the voter approved minimum distance eligibility requirements from their residence to school as follows:
- Grades K-5: 0.5 mile, or more
- Grades 6-8: 0.75 mile, or more
- Grades 9-12: 1.0 mile, or more
- PLEASE NOTE: Measured distance is the shortest distance between a student’s home and their school, which may differ from driving distance calculated by map software.
- Ensure full compliance with New York State transportation policies and regulations.
- Uphold and enforce safety standards in every aspect of school bus transportation, including disciplinary issues for any student jeopardizing the health, safety and well-being of any and all individuals on bus.
- Operate efficiently and cost-effectively to maximize resources.
- Maintain safe, respectful, and supportive bus conditions that promote students’ well-being.
