Non-Public School Transportation Information
In accordance with New York State Education Law, students attending non-public schools may be eligible for district-provided transportation. To receive transportation services for the upcoming school year, a Non-Public School Transportation Request must be submitted to the District Transportation Office no later than April 1. This process must be completed each year, even if your child(ren) are attending the same school as last year.
For families moving into the District after the April 1 deadline, transportation requests must be submitted within 30 days of establishing residency.
If the school your child will be attending changes , you must inform us of the change by emailing privateschoolrequests@greatneck.k12.ny.us. All changes to the school selection or submissions received after the April 1 deadline are considered late and will be denied. Families are afforded an opportunity to appeal the denial.
The following conditions must ALL be met as part of the decision-making process to grant an appeal. These same criteria apply to all requests received after April 1, except for new residents, who must comply with the 30-day rule detailed above.
- Has a reasonable explanation been provided for the late request?
- Is there an existing bus routed to this school serving the student’s neighborhood?
- Is there sufficient seating on an existing bus to accommodate an additional student?
- Can the transportation be provided at no additional cost to the District?
Transportation will be provided to the non-public school of choice, provided the school is within the statutory 15-mile limit and the student meets the following minimum distance eligibility requirements from their residence:
- ½ mile from the school (Grades K–5)
- ¾ mile from the school (Grades 6–8)
- 1 mile from the school (Grades 9–12)
PLEASE NOTE: Measured distance is the shortest distance between a student’s home and their school, which may differ from driving distance calculated by map software.
As per New York State Law, applications for transportation to a school greater than 15 miles from the student’s residence will be denied as per Education Law § 3635.
All students must be registered with the District in order to receive transportation services. Families who have not yet registered must complete the online registration process, available at:
https://www.greatneck.k12.ny.us/administration/registration-and-attendance/registration-and-online-
application (This applies to both public and non-public school students.)
All students must have proof of residency on file at all times. A current lease must be provided upon expiration of an existing lease. Transportation services will be discontinued if a current lease is not provided.
Transportation will not be provided on all Federal and New York State legal holidays (or their observances).
Additionally, the District reserves the right not to provide transportation on days when Great Neck Public Schools are not in session. These observances may vary year to year and are dependent on contractual agreements. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Friday after Thanksgiving
- Christmas Eve
- New Year’s Eve
- Lunar New Year
- Good Friday
A final transportation calendar will be shared prior to the start of each school year.
Transportation will also not be provided when Great Neck Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather. Morning transportation to non-public schools will follow the same delayed-opening procedures observed by Great Neck Public Schools.
