2026-27 Board Goals
The Board of Education sets several goals it would like to achieve by the end of each school year. After much deliberation, the following goals were developed by the Great Neck Board of Education for the current school year:
Goal 1: Advance Academic Excellence Through Consistent, Data-Informed Instruction
Continue to strengthen teaching and learning across the District through the systematic use of data, curriculum review, instructional best practices, and greater consistency in academic expectations.
A. Strengthen data-informed instruction by providing administrators and teachers with meaningful student achievement data and establishing systems for identifying and sharing effective instructional practices across schools.
B. Review and strengthen curriculum and instructional practices, including a cycle for reviewing core academic programs such as an examination of current elementary literacy programs and high school mathematics pathways.
C. Increase consistency in academic practices, including continued efforts to standardize secondary grading practices and ensure that students have equitable access to required academic supports.
D. Introduction of Full-Day Pre-Kindergarten to provide a solid foundation for our youngest learners entering the public school system.
Potential measures:
- Baseline and annual data on student achievement, course enrollment, grades, and other relevant academic indicators.
- Progress toward increased participation in advanced mathematics; such as Pre-Calculus and Calculus.
- Annual report to the Board identifying instructional practices implemented across schools and evidence of their impact.
- Stakeholder engagement to ensure a smooth transition to Full-Day Pre-Kindergarten for the 2027-28 school year.
Goal 2: Expand Student Opportunities and Strengthen College, Career, and Postsecondary Readiness
Ensure that students have equitable access to academic, extracurricular, and postsecondary opportunities while providing families and the Board with meaningful information about student pathways and outcomes.
A. Strengthen college and career readiness through expanded use of relevant data to support course selection, college planning, career exploration, and postsecondary decision-making.
B. Provide meaningful outcome data regarding college admissions trends, scholarships, AP and dual-enrollment participation, and other postsecondary pathways to better understand student opportunities and outcomes.
C. Examine equitable access to student activities and opportunities, including clubs, organizations, extracurricular activities, and leadership opportunities across grades and schools.
Potential measures:
- Examine trends in AP, dual-enrollment, advanced coursework, and postsecondary participation as well as data regarding college admissions, scholarships, and postsecondary pathways.
- Review of participation in clubs and organizations by grade level and school, including student leadership opportunities while examining identification and implementation of strategies to address demonstrated participation gaps.
Goal 3: Strengthen District Accountability, Transparency, and Data-Informed Decision-Making
Enhance the Board's ability to evaluate District progress and make informed decisions by establishing consistent expectations for data, reporting, initiative evaluation, and communication.
A. Develop clear frameworks for evaluating significant District initiatives, including defined measures of success, baseline data, timelines, and annual reporting to the Board.
B. Strengthen the decision-making process for major initiatives, policy recommendations, and community-sensitive matters by ensuring that the Board and community receive appropriate background information, relevant data, options, and analysis through the work of the Board and the committee structures that have been created.
Potential measures:
- Annual evaluation reports (by way of Board Committees) for identified major initiatives, including progress toward established success measures.
- Regular District data/relevant information presented to the Board (establishing an agreed upon schedule to do so).
- Documentation that major initiatives and recommendations include appropriate background, data, alternatives, and analysis.
- Analysis of significant changes in external rankings or other comparative measures, including contributing factors and potential responses.
Goal 4: Strengthen Districtwide Engagement, Community Connection, and Long-Term Planning
Increase engagement among students, families, staff, the Board, and the broader community while ensuring that the District's facilities and programs are planned strategically for the future.
A. Increase Board and District engagement with students and schools, including greater interaction with Student Delegates and increased Board presence during appropriate district functions.
B. Increase visibility and participation in District events and activities, including performing arts, athletics, student accomplishments, and other opportunities that strengthen connections across the District.
C. Develop and maintain a long-term facilities and program planning framework, including a three- to five-year facilities improvement plan and consideration of facility needs associated with initiatives such as Full-Day Pre-K and changing building configurations.
Potential measures:
- Regular Student Delegate engagement and feedback to the Board.
- Participation/attendance trends at major District events and activities.
