The Great Neck Public Schools Board of Education consists of five residents, elected by fellow residents in the annual school district election held in May. Each trustee serves a three-year, unpaid term. Terms are staggered, with one or two seats up for election each year. The Board has broad legal powers and responsibilities for determining educational policy, for supervising the administration of the schools, and for levying taxes on properties to support school district operations. The Board's chief executive officer is the Superintendent of Schools.
In 2025, New York State mandated the appointment of Ex-officio Student members to serve alongside elected trustees on public school boards. The initiative is designed to give students a stronger voice in their education, offering firsthand perspectives on the policies and decisions that shape their school experience. Ex-officio members, selected annually to represent each district high school, are non-voting members of the Board and are not entitled to participate in executive session or any other non-public meetings.
