Dear GNPS Community,
 
I am pleased to announce that, at last night’s Board of Education meeting, the Board unanimously appointed Dr. Heather Sweet-Lazos as the new, permanent principal of E.M. Baker Elementary School effective immediately, following the resignation of principal Michael Grimaldi last fall. 
 
Dr. Sweet-Lazos has served at an exceptional level as the interim principal since November. Prior to that, she was the assistant principal at Baker for the past 9 years. The selection committee met with several qualified candidates for this principal vacancy, and Dr. Sweet-Lazos’ experience, knowledge of the Baker community, and strong relationships with parents, students and staff are unparalleled. We look forward to her continued leadership in a permanent capacity moving forward.
 
On behalf of the Board of Education, I extend my appreciation to the members of our search committee for dedicating their time and thoughtful consideration throughout this important process. 
 
Dr. Sweet-Lazos’ appointment creates an assistant principal vacancy at Baker. Kathleen Murray will continue to serve as acting assistant principal through June, and the District will immediately begin the search for the next assistant principal to join the Baker family for the 2026-27 school year.
