April 22, 2026

Dear GNPS Community,

I am pleased to announce that, at last night’s Board of Education meeting, the Board unanimously appointed Dr. Maya Lerner as the new Assistant Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Educational Programs, effective April 27, 2026.

The Assistant Director will serve a vital role in the GNPS Office of Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Lerner will support our district administrators, building principals, and educators in all aspects of teaching and learning, including the review, development, and implementation of curriculum and district initiatives across grades PreK–12.

Dr. Lerner has been a member of the North High faculty for nearly 15 years, where she is currently the library media department head and staff developer. In recent years, she has taken the lead on several districtwide curriculum initiatives, serving as co-leader on the district’s Media Literacy Task Force, a member of the district’s AI Task Force, and participating in the Brandeis University Middle & High School Educators’ Institute on Israel and Antisemitism. In her capacity as a staff developer, Dr. Lerner has proven her ability to both create curricula and provide the professional development necessary for effective implementation across disciplines and grade levels.

Dr. Lerner was recently honored by the New York State Council of School Superintendents as an emerging leader in public education, and she was the recipient of the 2025 Nassau BOCES School Library System Administrator of the Year Award. She earned her Doctorate of Education in Transformational Leadership from LIU Post with a dissertation titled, “Teaching the Teachers and Guiding the Guardians: Assessing Differences in Information Literacy Competence.” She also holds a Masters in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Stony Brook University and Bachelor of Science in Biology from Tufts University.

A search committee of administrators and teachers met with several applicants for this multifaceted position. On behalf of the Board of Education, I extend my appreciation to our committee members for dedicating their time and consideration throughout this important process.

Dr. Lerner’s appointment creates a Library Media Department Head & Staff Developer vacancy at North High School. The district has already initiated the search for her successor at North High.

Sincerely,

Kenneth R. Bossert, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
