Martin Luther King III speaks from behind a podium on the South High School stage

The Great Neck Public Schools was honored to welcome Martin Luther King III, son of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, to our district on Feb. 6, 2025.

Martin Luther King III traveled to North High, North Middle, and South High to address all students in grades 5-12 over five assemblies. He spoke to students about his personal experiences and offered reflections on his father’s enduring legacy.

He also helped students connect Dr. King’s vision to their own lives and the world around them. A consistent theme throughout the assemblies was Mr. King's message of hope and empowerment for our next generation of young leaders.

The assemblies that took place at South High School carried a special significance, as Mr. King was returning to the same stage where his father, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., spoke in 1967.

Leading up to this visit, classes participated in meaningful, age-appropriate lessons about the work and lasting impact of the King family. Students collaborated by grade level to develop questions to ask our special guest at their respective assembly. This was an extraordinary opportunity for our students to connect with history and learn from someone who carries forward his father's message of peace, hope, and justice.

Thank you to our educators, Board of Education, parent-teacher organizations, and other community partners who helped make this memorable day possible.
