A team from South Middle School won first place at the 2025 Regional Middle School Science Bowl at Brookhaven National Laboratory and will advance to the National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. in April.
The regional event on Jan. 30 featured middle school teams from across Long Island and New York City. South Middle was represented by two teams in this fast-paced question-and-answer competition that covers a range of science disciplines, including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.
Members of South Middle’s Team 1, which came in first place and will advance to the national competition, are Austin Chen, Leeann Lee, Nathan Li, Ryan Tsai, and Zale Zhang. Members of Team 2, which participated in a STEM challenge and took second place, are Yu Han Chen, Zoe Li, Jack Pei, Kelvin Xu, and Kyle Zhang.
The South Middle Science Bowl team is coached by science teachers Diane Caplain and Nathan Wong.
