Two teams of high school students from the Great Neck Public Schools placed second and third among Nassau County competitors at the 2025 Long Island Envirothon on April 23. Congratulations to second-place team members Benson Chou, Colin Hu, Aodi Lin, Taisheng Wu and Yuhao Xu from South High School, and third-place team members Jessica Cao, Serena Chen, Michelle Cheng, Sophia Li and Lia Huang from North High School.
The district was represented by a total of five teams at this year’s competition—three teams from North High and two teams from South High. Teams prepared for the event with guidance from their respective faculty advisors: Jessica York, science department head at North High, and Andrew Tuomey, science teacher at South High.
The Long Island Regional Envirothon is a competition for high school students covering five subject areas: aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and the current issue, which changes annually. Teams of five students work together to complete an exam in each subject area and develop a 5-minute oral presentation on a problem-solving scenario related to the year’s current issue topic. The regional competition is sponsored by the Soil and Water Conservation Districts for Nassau County and Suffolk County.
