On March 30, a group of students from E.M. Baker Elementary School delivered custom 3D-printed crayon containers to CLASP, a childcare center in Great Neck. The containers were created in Baker’s STEAM Lab as part of a project that blends kindness, technology, and teamwork.
Under the guidance of technology teachers Adrienne Hoshino and Lisa Malfi, fourth and fifth-grade students were tasked to create 3D-printed containers with messages of kindness and encouragement. Working in teams, students brainstormed ideas and used the design process to create both 2D and 3D models. After evaluating and making changes to improve their designs using TinkerCad, the students’ ideas came to life with the school’s 3D printer. Each container was filled with crayons provided by the Baker PTO, and students wrote positive messages on gift tags for the recipients.
The crayon containers were delivered by fourth grade representatives from the Baker Gives Back morning community service program. Baker students enjoyed interacting with the young children, and the CLASP classes reciprocated with signs and cards expressing their appreciation for their new crayon containers.
