On September 15, the Great Neck Public Schools Board of Education welcomed three high school seniors to serve as ex officio student members for the 2026–27 school year. Alex Geller, Letizia Kaya and Cassandra Zheng—representing Village School, North High and South High, respectively—took the oath of office and began their tenure on the school board.
This is the second year that the Board of Education has appointed ex officio student members to serve alongside elected trustees. Alex, Letizia and Cassandra will sit at the dais during regular Board of Education meetings and participate in public discussions. While ex officio members do not vote on official matters, they will provide valuable insight and contribute to the dialogue on issues affecting students across the district.
New York State encourages public school boards to appoint ex officio members as a way for students to gain experience with the decision-making process and learn the importance of civic engagement, collaboration, and leadership.
Prior to their appointment, Alex, Letizia and Cassandra met with Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Bossert to discuss their role and responsibilities on the Board. Later this month, they will participate in a state-wide training for ex officio student members presented through BOCES in partnership with the New York State School Boards Association.
