Mrs. Becker - Social Studies

This half year course is designed to prepare students to think like economists as well as implement financial literacy.The class focuses on applying economic concepts to real life scenarios and builds on  students’ critical thinking skills. Students will be prepared for life after high school through projects such as “Financial Goal Setting” and “Budgeting for Life”.  This course is a requirement for graduation. 

Global history is usually taken in sequential order of 9th and 10th grade. This in depth exposure to world history lays the foundational skills for future history courses. Students enrolled in these courses gain an understanding of various factors that affect the global community across time and in numerous geographic regions. Our task will be to explain how and why events unfold and analyze their impact on the world today. Lessons are aligned with the NYS Social Studies Framework Standards while building literacy skills through primary and secondary source analysis. Students engage in full class, small group, and independent activities that assess their knowledge of the material. Global 2 culminates in a Regents exam, which is a graduation requirement.

Participation in Government is a civics class where students learn about the structure of the United States government and how to be a participant in society. Students look at the constitution, its parts, and functions of the government. Also, students learn about the levels of government in their life. Recently, the class looked at the process of appointing a judge, endorsing a candidate, and Election coverage. This class is a graduation requirement for all seniors.

This Regents level class that is 1 full year focuses on how and why events unfold through the study of historical context. We focus on understanding why events in the past happened in US history 1700s-present day, and the impact it has on the world we live in today. Lessons are aligned with the NYS Social Studies Framework Standards while building literacy skills through primary and secondary source analysis and designed around attainable learning goals.
