This class will focus on skills that encourage students to read with purpose. “Literary analysis” skills involve noticing how specific elements of writing enhance the story and bring characters to life. Students will explore how writers use conflict, setting and imagery as tools to create stories that represent features of our culture and society. We will read contemporary novels, short stories and poetry to apply the skills learned through the year. In addition, students will read informational nonfiction texts in order to learn how to extract evidence that supports an argument as well as write out a clear and persuasive essay supporting one side of a particular topic.
