June 11, 2023

Dear Great Neck School Community,

Dr. Teresa PrendergastIt is with heavy hearts that we share the untimely passing of Superintendent of Schools Dr. Teresa Prendergast. First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Prendergast’s family and loved ones during this extremely difficult time.

Dr. Prendergast faithfully served our school community for the past eight years as superintendent, always putting the needs of Great Neck students and staff first. We are confident that our entire community will join us in remembering her strong commitment to all the children of the District.

Dr. Prendergast always led with grace and dignity, attention to detail and a caring attitude. These attributes not only made her an outstanding superintendent but were the qualities that endeared Dr. Prendergast to those who knew her well. She guided our staff, students and greater school community through several challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, with patience, understanding and a commitment to working with all community stakeholders.

Our District has mobilized its crisis management team. Grief counseling will be available for any student or staff member in need at each GNPS building beginning Monday morning.

We will keep the community updated as we learn of information regarding arrangements for Dr. Prendergast. In the meantime, please keep her family and loved ones close in your thoughts and prayers. While words cannot adequately express our condolences, we wish to ensure that they feel the complete love and support of the Great Neck community behind them.
