District Announces New Pre-K Site for Kennedy School Attendance Zone

At the Great Neck Board of Education meeting on Dec. 17, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Teresa Prendergast announced plans for a new pre-kindergarten site at the John F. Kennedy School. This location will be available in September 2019 for students residing within the Kennedy School attendance zone.

“Research demonstrates that a high-quality pre-kindergarten program results in increased kindergarten readiness and future academic success in young learners,” explained Dr. Prendergast. She added that Kennedy School is the district’s only Title I school, and that the recent federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) regulations call for innovative and creative support for such schools.

Students zoned for the district’s three other elementary schools—E.M. Baker, Lakeville, and Saddle Rock—will continue to attend the pre-kindergarten program at Parkville School.

The Great Neck Public Schools offers a pre-kindergarten program for district residents at no cost. There are currently 209 students enrolled in the pre-kindergarten program at Parkville School, located at 10 Campbell St., New Hyde Park. In compliance with the New York State Education Department, some students can attend the district’s UPK collaborative agency, Great Neck Community School, located at 225 Schenck Ave.

Pre-kindergarten registration for the 2019–20 school year started in December 2018 and remains open for residents. To be enrolled, children must be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2019. For more information about registration, please visit the district website at

Additional details about the district’s pre-kindergarten initiative, including the new site at Kennedy School, will be presented at the next public Board of Education meeting on Jan. 10, 2019, at 8:30 p.m. at the E.M. Baker School, 69 Baker Hill Rd. The presentation will be available on the district website following the meeting. For all Board presentations, please visit
