Absentee Ballot Deadline Extension for 2020-21 Budget Vote
On Sunday, June 7, Governor Cuomo announced an Executive Order extending the deadline for school districts to receive absentee ballots for the annual District Election and School Budget Vote. To be counted, absentee ballots must be received by the school district by hand delivery through 5 p.m. on June 9, or received by mail in the Office of the District Clerk through June 16.
Each absentee ballot has an enclosed postage-paid return envelope and instructions for returning the ballot by mail. Voters who wish to hand-deliver completed ballots must do so before 5 p.m. on June 9 using the secure ballot drop-off box at the GNPS Security Office, located next to the Phipps Administration Building, 345 Lakeville Road. Ballots submitted after June 9 will be accepted only by mail and must be received by the Office of the District Clerk no later than June 16.
Voters are advised that, per the Governor's Executive Order, no new ballots are to be distributed by the District after June 9. The one-week extension is merely to account for potential delays in the mail.
Like many school district operations, the annual District Election and School Budget Vote has taken on a new form in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 1, Governor Cuomo announced that this year’s budget vote would take place by absentee ballot only, and District officials quickly put measures in place to meet all State requirements for this unprecedented voting procedure. More than 30,000 absentee ballots were mailed to qualified voters of the school district on May 27.
Any registered voter who has questions should contact the Office of the District Clerk on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at (516) 441-4020, or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
