Budget Vote Date Changed to May 11, 2021

On March 16, the State Education Department approved an appeal made by the District to change the date of the GNPS School District Election and Budget Vote to May 11, 2021.

The District is appreciative of the efforts of our state elected officials and representatives who supported our appeal in Albany, especially Senator Anna Kaplan, Assemblywoman Gina Sillitti, and Regent Roger Tilles.

A message from Superintendent Dr. Prendergast informing the community about this appeal, which was made on March 12, can be found below.

March 12, 2021

Dear GNPS Community:

This afternoon, our Board of Education voted to file an emergency appeal with the State to change the date of this year’s School District Election and Budget Vote. According to New York State law, school districts are required to hold elections on the third Tuesday in May. This year, the election date of May 18 conflicts with the observance of the holiday Shavuot, so our Board has requested to change our District’s election date to May 11, 2021.

We regret not filing this appeal earlier, as we were unaware of our ability to make this request to the State Education Department. We’ve contacted our State legislators and asked for their support of our emergency appeal to the Commissioner. It’s unknown how long it will take the State to review our request and make a decision.

Our District values the voice of every voter and we strive to make the school budget process as transparent and accessible as possible. We will provide updates as soon as they are available.

Sincerely,
Dr. Teresa Prendergast
Superintendent of Schools
