Merit Scholarship $2,500 Winners

Two seniors in the Great Neck Public Schools are recipients of National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The scholarship recipients are Raymond Lin from North High School, and Gabriel Magidson from South High School.

National Merit $2,500 designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The number of winners in each state is based on the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. Winners are selected based on academics, the difficulty of their course work, scores from two standardized tests, contributions to school and community activities, written essays, and school recommendations.

High school students enter the Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), usually in their junior year. This year’s competition recognized 41 Great Neck seniors as Commended Students, 16 as Semifinalists, 16 as Finalists, and two students as $2,500 scholarship winners in the National Competition.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited US college or university.
