High School Teams Selected for Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Competition
Four teams of high school musicians from the Great Neck Public Schools have been selected to compete in the preliminary round of the Young Musicians Innovation Challenge, sponsored by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS). Participants include two teams from North High School and two teams from South High School.
The Young Musicians Innovation Challenge provides high school musicians with a unique opportunity to compete for the chance to launch innovative chamber music projects with mentorship and financial support from CMS.
Chamber music projects proposed by North High musicians are: “Chamber Music in the Real World,” submitted by Stephany Barbu, Jonathan Kim, Amitha Kumar, Elizabeth Margiloff, and Su Qi Tian; and “Chamber Music Series,” submitted by Nathaniel Bikhman, Sara Rafaeil, Jules Sanders, Maverick Williams, and Christopher Yang.
Chamber music projects proposed by South High musicians are: “ChamberDischord,” submitted by Brayden Chien, Drew Kim, and Sebastian Lennox; and “Musiclusive,” submitted by Jillian Chang and Joy Yang.
Teams entered the challenge by submitting a project application, written summary, and two-minute video presentation. During the preliminary round of competition, students will elaborate on their proposals and answer questions from a panel of judges via Zoom on Oct. 26.
The Young Musicians Innovation Challenge is open to high school students in the New York Tri-State Area, Philadelphia, PA, and Miami, FL. Entries are adjudicated based on “creativity, viability, sustainability, and ways in which projects address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
The North High chamber music program is coordinated by Dr. Pamela Levy, performing and fine arts department head/vocal music teacher, and Joseph Rutkowski, instrumental music teacher. The South High chamber music program is coordinated by Michael Schwartz, performing arts department head/instrumental music teacher, and Dr. Janine Robinson, vocal music teacher.
