GNPS/TV Wins Three National Awards
Great Neck Public Schools Television (GNPS/TV) is the proud recipient of three national awards in the Alliance for Community Media (ACM) 2021 Hometown Media Awards. Student-produced programs from GNPS/TV won the top honor in three categories: Best Music Video, Best Public Service Announcement, and Best Web Based Program.
The winner of the Best Music Video category was a holiday music video featuring students and staff from North Middle School and South Middle School. The GNPS/TV team collaborated to produce the video in December 2020 in the spirit of togetherness during a tumultuous time.
The winning submission in the Best Public Service Announcement (PSA) category was created by South High student Sophia Leong. Sophia produced her award-winning PSA, titled “No One is a Virus,” as a class assignment for the South High Advanced Filmmaking course.
GNPS/TV received the top award in the Best Web Based Program category for the 2020 Great Neck South High Virtual Graduation. With school buildings closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic, the GNPS/TV team rose to the occasion and produced a virtual ceremony to celebrate graduating seniors. One creative highlight from the South High Virtual Graduation included seniors using their ID badges to “swipe out” one last time. “This was unlike any other graduation and the GNPS/TV team is thrilled to be recognized for this award-winning program,” explains Robert Zahn, district educational TV and broadcast media director.
The student division of the Hometown Media Awards requires that the overall direction, production, and all technical tasks (camera, directing, editing, sound, etc.) be performed by students at the primary, secondary, or undergraduate level. Entries are evaluated by a team of qualified judges.
GNPS/TV programs air on Optimum Channel 75 or Verizon FiOS Channel 32 within the Incorporated Villages of Great Neck, and are available on-demand on the district website. For information about GNPS/TV and its student-produced programming, contact Mr. Zahn at rzahn@greatneck.k12.ny.us.
