Long Island Music Hall of Fame Scholarship Recipient
North High School senior Tiantian Emily Wei has been announced by the Long Island Music Hall of Fame as a recipient of the 2022 Distinction in Music award. Emily is one of four Long Island high school seniors to receive this $500 scholarship in recognition of their music accomplishments. Emily plans to attend Mannes School of Music in the fall.
Emily plays the violin in the North High Symphony Orchestra and the Commencement Orchestra, under the direction of instrumental music teacher Joseph Rutkowski. She has also participated in a wide range of performances with various organizations, including NYSSMA, All-County, and All-State Symphony Orchestras.
This past April, Emily performed as the Concertmaster when the North High Symphony Orchestra took the stage at Carnegie Hall. “This experience also promoted a clearer vision of my future music career,” Emily said in her application essay. “I envision myself entering the New York Symphony Orchestra or forming my own chamber music group, performing in concert halls all over the world to show the beauty of music and expressing my unique understanding of music. I am full of passion for music, all this experience makes me more sure of my goals to continue my music career.”
As a member of the North High chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, Emily has shared her talents with the Great Neck community through performances for local hospitals, nursing homes, and retirement homes. She also served as a NYSSMA monitor every year that Great Neck hosted the NYSSMA Piano Festival, and she volunteered to help at the annual GNPS Faculty Recital.
“The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is honored to have the opportunity to support and acknowledge accomplished high school seniors who are pursuing a future in music,” said LIMHoF Education Chairman Tom Needham. “The talent that exists on Long Island is something we at LIMHoF want to celebrate. In addition to following their own dreams, we believe these students will encourage and inspire others.”
