Great Neck Public Schools Opens Clothing Pantry

School administrators and social workers cut a ribbon to mark the grand opening.

The Great Neck Public Schools is pleased to announce the grand opening of the Clothing Pantry at Saddle Rock School, now serving local families in our school community.

The Clothing Pantry is a donation-based program that ensures that students who are in need of size and weather-appropriate clothing are able to access these necessities without interruption to their academic, social, and emotional learning. The pantry is accessed by the Social Work team upon request from a teacher, administrator, or parent.

The idea was first discussed among the Social Work team and building administrators at Saddle Rock this past fall. The initiative received tremendous support from members of the Saddle Rock staff and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), who donated new or lightly-used clothing for the Pantry. Staff members also generously volunteered their time to sort through the clothing donations and organize the Pantry, which is housed in a small storage room at Saddle Rock School.

The Pantry opened to families in the Saddle Rock area in January, and quickly expanded to serve elementary and middle school-age children at Saddle Rock School, E.M. Baker School, John F. Kennedy School, and North Middle School. There are plans to grow the program to meet the needs of the entire District.

As the program gained momentum, the GNPS Buildings and Grounds Department stepped in to renovate the small storage room at Saddle Rock that houses the Clothing Pantry. Under the direction of Alfredo Cavallaro, Director of Facilities and Operations, the Buildings and Grounds crew built custom shelving and clothing racks to help organize the space.

The once-empty storage closet at Saddle Rock School has been transformed into a bright wardrobe full of clothing, jackets, shoes, and weather-appropriate accessories for Great Neck families in need. The Clothing Pantry continuously restocks and expands the selection of items available on an ongoing basis.

To celebrate the grand opening of the Clothing Pantry, Saddle Rock School welcomed District and community leaders to a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 30.
