Blazers Live Returns to the Air

Blazers Live, the student-produced morning television program at North Middle School, delivered their first show of the school year on Dec. 8. This daily television program allows students an opportunity to write, produce, direct, and deliver school news and announcements in a live broadcast.

The Blazers Live team has overcome challenges to continue delivering this news program during the pandemic. This school year, in order to meet social distancing guidelines and ensure a safe studio space, the normal crew size has been reduced by half. There is a nine-member crew for hybrid A day and a different nine-member crew for hybrid B day, with each student filling multiple roles in the television studio. Equipment is cleaned daily in accordance with district protocols.

The production crew at Blazers Live is composed of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders who volunteer their talents and skills to the program. Students spend weeks learning how to use the studio equipment and how to perform different responsibilities within the Blazers Live team.

Crew members arrive at North Middle almost an hour before the school day begins to prepare for the ten-minute live broadcast during homeroom. This includes setting up equipment, reviewing the script, and rehearsing the entire program all before going live at 8:20 a.m.

In the spring of 2020, while school buildings were closed due to the pandemic, crew members worked remotely from their homes to prepare a weekly edition of Blazers Not Live that was recorded, edited, and shared with North Middle students and staff.

Blazers Live is a student-produced program featuring live announcements about school news, world news, current events, weather reports and trivia, as well as pre-recorded video segments about school activities. The program is currently in its sixth year. Blazers Live is produced under the direction of Paul Derych, television/film and social studies teacher at North Middle and editing supervisor for GNPS/TV.
