North High Celebrates World Autism Month

North High faculty are shown wearing their autism awareness t-shirts and standing in front of a display

North High School is celebrating World Autism Month with various activities to raise awareness, support students, and encourage acts of kindness with the theme, “Light Up with Kindness.”

This year, faculty in the North High ACE and Transition programs designed a special autism awareness t-shirt that was made available for staff to purchase. All proceeds from the t-shirt sales benefit the Evan Grabelsky Memorial Fund, established in memory of a North High special education teacher. More than $2,800 has been raised from this event to support scholarship opportunities for students with disabilities.

Faculty members wore their North High autism awareness t-shirt or an article of blue clothing on April 9 in honor of Autism Awareness Day. Staff members also shared their names on a paper puzzle piece for a large hallway mural that reads: “Great Neck North High School – You are a Part of the Puzzle.”

North High faculty continue to promote small acts of kindness throughout the month to demonstrate compassion and support for autism awareness. World Autism Awareness Month is celebrated each April to increase understanding and acceptance, and foster worldwide support for people with autism.
