South Middle Community Closet Hosts Successful Event

Faculty, social workers, and administrators volunteer at the Community Closet free shopping event in the South Middle gym

On Oct. 14, the Community Closet at South Middle School hosted a “free shopping” event to provide clothing and shoes for local families in need. Dozens of families picked up clothing items of all sizes and for all seasons, free of charge. GNPS staff members — including custodial staff, security staff, school social workers, faculty, and administrators from South Middle and Saddle Rock schools — pitched in to provide a safe and welcoming experience for families in attendance.

The Community Closet at South Middle and the Clothing Pantry at Saddle Rock work collaboratively to provide clothing to students in need without interruption to their academic, social, and emotional learning. These district-wide programs can be accessed by the district’s social work team upon request from a teacher, administrator, or parent. The two locations occasionally host free shopping events for families in need within the Great Neck Public Schools community; the next free shopping event is scheduled for Dec. 8 at Saddle Rock School.
